Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Job Summary:

Mercy High School Farmington Hills is seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Director serves as a member of the President’s leadership team, partnering with other senior leaders to develop and drive forward the key strategies of the organization. The Director will work collaboratively with the internal and external Mercy community to create a culture of equity. Mercy High School commits to anti-racism, inclusion and social justice in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

365体育备用网站Provide leadership and implement action to promote anti-racism, inclusion and the potential inherent in a diverse school community.

  • Champion racial equity in concert with the President and the President’s leadership team to create a welcoming and inclusive culture at Mercy.

  • Educate the Mercy internal and external community and stakeholders about racial equity, unconscious bias, microaggressions and cultural competency. 

  • Actively and visibly support the Mercy CORE (Council on Racial Equity) - the Black Alumnae organization.

  • 365体育备用网站Develop strategies to achieve racial equity goals and objectives set by the Board of Directors using appropriate assessments and evaluations of the Mercy environment and culture.

  • 365体育备用网站Design, propose and assist with initiatives to visibly strengthen and support Mercy strategies to address anti-racism, diversity, racial equity and inclusion.

  • Establish measurable goals to guide Mercy and create a data dashboard that helps Mercy assess progress and identify areas of focus.

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to ensure fair and equitable treatment of students, faculty and staff.

  • Implement anti-racist, diversity and unconscious bias training throughout the Mercy community and among and between all stakeholders

Programming:

  • Design, develop and deliver diversity and cultural competency programs rooted in research and best practices for administrators, teachers, staff, students and parents to ensure continuous learning.

  • 365体育备用网站Establish a toolkit for Mercy employees to ensure a base level of understanding and shared language of diversity concepts.

  • Provide guidance and support to student organizations pursuing projects with a diversity focus, including student affinity groups.

  • Develop and support feedback processes for students to communicate concerns.

  • 365体育备用网站Lead academically, socially, culturally fulfilling and enjoyable student programs.

  • 365体育备用网站Attend with students and staff, local or national programs that train students to recognize and address issues of poverty, racism, sexism and religious intolerance.

Other Collaborations:

  • Actively engage and develop response strategies and recommendations for administrative personnel regarding issues of diversity and inclusion to ensure that organizational culture, practices and leadership development are anchored in Mercy’s vision for equity and inclusion.

  • 365体育备用网站Collaborate with Student Activities, Faith and Service, and other school groups to develop activities, events and programs that will create a welcoming and open environment for all students.

  • Collaborate with the Counseling Department to ensure culturally responsive, unbiased support and encouragement to students regarding goal setting, academics and college selection.

  • 365体育备用网站Act as staff advisor as needed to the Human Relations Council; a student leadership group.

  • Review school metrics to identify needed areas for growth and explore those opportunities.

  • Work with the Principal’s leadership team to ensure student handbook and HR policies are just and applied consistently and appropriately.

  • Ensure alignment across different departments including marketing, health services, athletic department, etc., to support the unique needs and opportunities of culturally diverse populations.

  • Build strong relationships with faculty and staff, growing Mercy’s culture of anti-racism, racial equity and inclusion.

Hiring Initiatives:

  • Develop strategies with the Administration and assist with the implementation of intentional recruitment efforts to identify and hire Black and other diverse teachers and staff.

  • Work with the Administration to ensure recruitment initiatives and hiring policies and practices provide equal opportunity for all candidates regardless of gender, color, background or culture.

Admissions and Retention Initiatives:

  • 365体育备用网站Assist the Admissions Office to understand barriers to enrollment and develop strategies to identify and build relationships with diverse students and their families.

  • 365体育备用网站Develop initiatives to enhance the daily student life of diverse students to improve their sense of belonging and purpose within the Mercy Community.

  • Support students in academic, athletic and extracurricular activities to achieve success.

  • Engage alumnae and parents of alumnae who will help connect Mercy with prospective students, adults or other resources.

Education

Qualifications, Experience and Abilities:

This position requires an inspiring, collaborative, courageous, innovative and visionary leader with outstanding people and management skills. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director will shape Mercy’s DEI strategy and guide our efforts. The Director will hold up a mirror to our organization, support our efforts to improve, and hold us accountable when we fail.  More specifically, the Director needs to have:

  • Experience and/or ability in leading and providing training for ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, preferably in an educational setting.

  • A minimum of three to five years of relevant work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods working at a desk and on a computer.

  • Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping.

English Teacher

Mercy High School has need for a highly qualified English teacher. Candidates holding State of Michigan certification in secondary English instruction are welcome to apply. Candidates from under-represented backgrounds and/or those holding State of Michigan certification in secondary English and Social Studies instruction are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a willingness to teach American and World literature, as well as academic and creative writing (poetry) to grades 9-12. 

Mercy is an Apple Distinguished school, and candidates should have the ability to support lessons through effective use of technology tools.
